The Offices for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Preparedness and Emergency Health Care, in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Division of Public Health will be jointly sponsoring Disaster Response Interpreter Training for preselected sign language interpreters in 2017. Save these dates on your calendar now! More information on registration to follow.

This day and a half course will be taught in American Sign Language and is intended for professional sign language interpreters working in Wisconsin who may be called upon to provide interpreting services during and after a disaster. All participants must be fluent in ASL. The training emphasizes basic knowledge of emergency response and recovery activities, and provides practice opportunities for interpreting at press conferences and shelters.

Trainees will be trained in how to provide interpretation for senior elected officials providing public information regarding a disaster and how to respond to a specific emergency or disaster site, such as a community shelter, to support people in need of ASL language interpretation. Information will also include media and press protocols, shelter operations and recovery services, interpreter readiness, and alert, notification, and deployment procedures for use by interpreters in disaster response.

The training and all course materials will be provided at no cost to the selected participants. Lunch and breaks will be provided. All other expenses are the responsibility of the student. We are an equal opportunity educational provider. This course is limited to a maximum of 30 students. Preference will be given to Wisconsin licensed interpreters holding national certification.

Course lead instructors are a professional interpreter and a deaf professional from the Northern California Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
